Leicester City must start work on increasing the capacity of the King Power Stadium by December 2027.
Leicester City’s plans to develop their King Power Stadium must start by 2027 or they face submitting another application to be approved by the council.
The Foxes have been on a remarkable journey under the Srivaddhanaprabha family, with the obvious high point coming when they won the Premier League and the FA Cup.
As we know, the past few years have been difficult, but the owners claim they remain ambitious, and it was previously revealed that part of the grand plans for the club included improving the stadium.
It had been explained that Leicester wanted to increase capacity by 8,000, as well as adding a ‘fanzone and public realm, an event and entertainment arena, a 220-room hotel, a residential tower and a new flagship club retail space’.
This was formally approved by Leicester City Council in December 2023, but the club are yet to act on any of those plans, which has left some fans wondering what is happening.
And, in a fresh update, The Sun has revealed, as shared by Stadium DB, that the Championship side do have a deadline to meet if they are to improve the King Power Stadium.
They state how the council gave a deadline of December 2027 for the club to start work on the stadium expansion. If they don’t, they will have to submit another proposal.
You can understand why things have gone quiet on the stadium front with Leicester as they have been up and down the top two divisions in the past two years.
Clearly, that is going to impact whether the club decides to go ahead with the stadium plans, as it will be a substantial investment, and there will be questions over whether they need a 40,000 stadium in the Championship.
But, with the deadline just over two years away, you would expect that the club would be waiting to make a decision, but fans would want clarity on the situation, and the long-term plans of the club.
Of course, the immediate priority will be getting Leicester back to the Premier League, and promotion is obviously going to increase the chance of the club pushing this expansion through.
So, it will be interesting to see how this develops, and if Leicester can make progress on the pitch over the coming years as they look to establish themselves back among the elite in the country.
