With the Women’s Super League at the halfway stage, SheKicks is compiling report cards for each of the WSL teams and next up is Leicester City.

How have Leicester City started the WSL season?

WSL fans gave Leicester City little hope at the start of the season after what looked to be an underwhelming summer transfer window and after the shock decision to sack Amandine Miquel just days before the start of the campaign.

Many expected Leicester to struggle to the levels that Liverpool have this season, with the Reds yet to win a game this campaign.

However, Leicester sit ninth at the halfway stage, with nine points from their opening 11 games.

The Foxes have been clearly outclassed in heavy defeats to both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Brighton.

They have also shown tremendous spirit in certain games. None more so than their 1-0 victory over Liverpool, when they were reduced to 10 players at 0-0 after 56 minutes.

Rick Passmoor’s side also held Everton, Aston Villa and West Ham to draws before pulling off a 1-0 victory over London City Lionesses just before the winter break.

Leicester City have struggled for goals this season

How are Leicester City’s summer signings performing?

Emily van Egmond and Olivia McLoughlin have been regular starters for Leicester City this season.

Van Egmond is just one of four players to score for Leicester City in the Women’s Super League this campaign.

Celeste Boureille and Heather Payne have been in and out of the team, while Rosella Ayane has come off the bench seven times.

Katie Keane, a summer signing from Shamrock Rovers, was recalled from her loan at Sheffield United.

Cecily Wellesley-Smith, a loan addition from Arsenal, has only featured once in a League Cup victory over Ipswich.

Performance of Leicester City head coach

Rick Passmoor has done an admirable job at Leicester City, given that he only stepped in as interim manager days before the start of the season.

The Foxes have clear issues in the squad as shown by the fact they have only scored seven goals so far this term – lower than any other side in the league.

While Leicester are struggling in front of goal, Paasmoor’s side have shown plenty of fight throughout the season so far.

Passmoor will hope that the Foxes can strengthen during the January transfer window to help them pull away from the relegation fight below them.

Leicester City WSL midseason report grade: C+

Leicester City get a respectable C+ grade for their WSL midseason report, the same as Arsenal and only behind Brighton and Chelsea so far.

The Foxes are overachieving in the league based on their struggles for goals. But that shows how resilient they have been defensively in many games this season against stronger opposition.

Victories over Liverpool and London City could prove crucial for the Foxes in their battle to stay in the WSL, particularly when West Ham and Liverpool have struggled for wins this campaign.

WSL midseason report grades so far

  1. Arsenal midseason grade – C+
  2. Aston Villa midseason grade – C-
  3. Brighton midseason grade – B-
  4. Chelsea midseason grade – B
  5. Everton midseason grade – C-
