Leicester City are interested in Ipswich Town and Wrexham target Jordan James, who is expected to leave Rennes before the deadline.
Leicester City are the latest club to show an interest in Stade Rennais midfielder Jordan James, with the Wales international expected to leave the Ligue 1 side before the 7pm deadline on Monday.
The 21-year-old joined the French side last year from Birmingham City and he made 23 appearances in the top-flight, but he is now struggling for game time under new boss Habib Beye.
Therefore, a summer departure is expected, and it has been suggested that the former Blues man will return to the UK, with Ipswich and Wrexham both chasing the player.
However, it appears they will face competition for his signature, as French media outlet Le Parisien has confirmed that the Foxes are now looking to sign James.
They state that Leicester are in ‘active discussions’ to sign the player, although they have not yet reached an agreement with Stade Rennais over what will be a permanent transfer.
It seems unlikely that the French club will stand in the way of James leaving, as he failed to make the matchday squad last week, and he isn’t involved once again as they take on Angers on Sunday afternoon.
James has plenty of Championship experience despite being just 21 years of age, with the 20-cap Wales international featuring 95 times for Birmingham in the second tier of English football before his departure.
Leicester beat Birmingham on Friday with Oliver Skipp and Boubakary Soumare in midfield, whilst Harry Winks didn’t get off the bench, so it’s not like they’re lacking quality options in the middle of the park.
But, James would still be a smart signing, as he would bring something different to the team with his power and the way he can travel forward with the ball.
His move to France hasn’t worked out in the way James would’ve wanted, but anyone who remembers James from his Birmingham days will remember the ability he has, and, at 21, there is still major room to develop.
The 20-cap Welsh international scored eight goals in the 2023/24 Championship season, which is an impressive return, especially as he played in a relegated side.
So, he would be an exciting addition, and the fact that Wrexham and Ipswich are in the mix to sign James shows that he is a player that clubs in the second tier rate very highly.
It seems inevitable that James will be on the move in the next 24 hours, and it will be intriguing to see where he ends up.
