Marti Cifuentes has hinted at progress in Leicester City’s pursuit of free agent striker Michail Antonio, who has been training with the squad, and said a decision could arrive in the next few days.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the former West Ham forward has worked at Seagrave for a couple of weeks, with Cifuentes sounding optimistic but stressing City will only sign players who improve the team.

Antonio, 35, has not played a senior club match in more than a year, yet City hope his strengths could add bite to a frontline where Jordan Ayew, Patson Daka and Julian Carranza have combined for three non-penalty goals this campaign.

The manager said Antonio trained with the team on Tuesday and that both sides agreed to take time before deciding. He added that specifics over Antonio’s role would be discussed only if a contract is signed.

The need looks urgent. Daka is at the Africa Cup of Nations, Carranza has been overlooked, and winger Silko Thomas came on up front against QPR and scored his first senior goal.

Despite that, Leicester are joint-seventh for goals scored in the Championship, thanks to contributions from wide areas and midfield.
