James McCarron, formerly Sunderland’s head of performance, is poised to join Leicester City in a newly created sporting director role, according to BBC Sport.
The Foxes are fighting to avoid the drop at the foot of the Championship after relegation last season, a task complicated by a recent points deduction for breaching financial regulations.
They also recently parted company with head coach Marti Cifuentes, bringing in Gary Rowett on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
McCarron spent 14 months on Wearside between May 2016 and June of the following year, then worked as an elite performance manager for the Premier League and as head of sports science and medicine at Manchester City. He later became sporting director at Belgian side Lommel, working alongside former Sunderland boss Lee Johnson, before moving to the City Football Group as director of player development.
He is now expected to leave the City Football Group to take up the Leicester role, working alongside director of football Jon Rudkin. He is expected to start at the King Power Stadium next month.
