Leicester City transfer boost as Harry Winks contract clause emerges

Harry Winks will not leave Leicester City on a free this summer, an automatic extension keeps him under contract beyond 2026. He has 12 months left at the King Power Stadium, so any exit would require a fee.

LeicesterMercury.co.uk reports that Winks signed a three-year deal in 2023 after a transfer from Tottenham worth up to £10m, and promotion in 2024 triggered a clause adding a further year.

An integral figure under Enzo Maresca in the Championship title win, he then endured a turbulent spell, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Marti Cifuentes omitting him late in their tenures. His late-January return drew a mixed response of boos and cheers.

He is now back as a regular and looks likely to be important for Gary Rowett as City fight to avoid relegation to League One. Winks could still move on this summer, regardless of how the season ends.

Any buyers must pay, and anything above £2.5m would ensure City record a Profit and Sustainability Rules profit. His rumoured wages may deter clubs, but it is understood he earns less than half of £90,000 a week. Contracts across the squad were cut after last season’s drop from the Premier League.

With Winks contracted past this summer, six senior deals are due to expire, covering Ricardo Pereira, Patson Daka, Jordan Ayew, Jamaal Lascelles, Asmir Begovic and Wanya Marcal. Loan players Jordan James, Divine Mukasa, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Aribo and Dujuan Richards are also set to depart.
