Leicester City have their sights set on Sam Greenwood, with the 23-year-old seemingly deemed surplus to requirements at Leeds United.

Greenwood has featured just twice at Elland Road since Daniel Farke took over as manager in 2023, and has spent the last two seasons on loan at Middlesbrough and Preston North End.

With just a year left on his Leeds contract, the Mail Online are reporting that the Foxes are interested in bringing in the former Arsenal and Sunderland youth product.

However, this has ruffled the feathers of plenty of Leicester supporters, and FLW's Foxes fan pundit, Louchlainn Martin, fully understands why.

Leicester City fan pundit believes they can do much better than Sam Greenwood

Speaking to Football League World, Martin said: "Sam Greenwood's been a name who has been doing the rounds over the last 24 hours or so, and it's safe to say that the reaction among Leicester fans has been pretty poor, and I can understand why.

"This team was once bringing in the likes of Youri Tielemans and James Maddison, and now they're linked with Sam Greenwood. It just goes to show how far the club has fallen."

Less than a decade ago, the King Power Stadium was hosting Champions League football. Now, they're preparing for a second season in the second tier in three years, and are currently in financial limbo after being charged with an alleged breach of the EFL's financial rules.

But despite all this, Martin still feels that his club can aim higher than Sam Greenwood.

He continued: "With all due respect to the guy, he creates chances, and he's scored a hatful of goals, but for me, we can do a lot better, even with the rot we seem to be in at the moment with potential points deductions.

"There are better options out there in Europe, even in some of the smaller leagues that would be better than Greenwood."

New manager could decide whether Sam Greenwood joins Leicester City

Martin went on to state that, due to the experience which Greenwood has built up in the second tier over the past few seasons, a more traditional manager would value this and look to bring the 23-year-old in, rather than someone unknown from a foreign league.

"He does have that Championship experience, and depending on what manager we bring in, a younger, more progressive manager might prefer a younger, hidden gem type of player," he said.

"But if we bring in someone like Sean Dyche or someone who may value experience more, then Greenwood would provide that.

"He's still of a decent age, and I'm sure he can develop, but he's not someone that gets fans excited, and I think it would be a pretty disheartening start to the transfer window for Leicester [if he signs]."

Sam Greenwood may not be as bad a get as Leicester fans think

For a Leicester side who may have to spend little this summer, Sam Greenwood would represent an affordable, solid signing.

Whilst on loan at Preston last season, his 14 big chances created placed him seventh in the entire Championship, so his potential to create and improve is there.

Foxes fans will also be aware of how dangerous he can be from set-pieces. His free-kick strike for Middlesbrough against Leicester was one of the goals of the season in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

For Leicester fans, though, the disappointment comes primarily from how far their club has sunk in such a long time.

In the last ten years, Leicester City have won the Premier League, the FA Cup and have played in the Champions League. Now, they're being linked with someone deemed not good enough to play for Leeds over the past two seasons.

Greenwood most definitely isn't on the level of the likes of James Maddison or Youri Tielemans, but he may be among the best Leicester can get this summer.
