Leicester confirm Fran Vieites leaves after mutual contract termination | OneFootball

Fran Vieites has left Leicester City after he and the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, City signed the former Real Betis keeper after last summer’s window closed and he joined Marti Cifuentes’ side on a two-year deal.

His competitive minutes never arrived. He featured only in this summer’s pre-season, with Jakub Stolarczyk and Asmir Begovic preferred throughout 2025/26.

This summer Russell Martin added Alex McCarthy following his release from Southampton, while Begovic departed. Academy stopper Stevie Bausor has been involved regularly in pre-season with new goalkeeping coach Tom Weal.

Vieites played under Martin in early pre-season before McCarthy arrived, including a behind-closed-doors friendly against Coventry City. It remains to be seen whether Leicester will recruit a third-choice goalkeeper before the window shuts.

McCarthy and Stolarczyk are competing to be City’s number one this season. Stolarczyk is expected to start against Northampton Town today, with McCarthy managing a minor knock.

Martin said McCarthy had returned to training, but a decision would be taken on his availability for the cup. "Alex is training, so we've just got to make a decision whether it's too early or not to put him back in," he said.
