Sammy Braybrooke scored his first senior goal from inside his own half for Newport County, yet Leicester City still face a three-way call on his next step after a 4-1 defeat at Colchester.

Just a week after Fatawu’s wondergoal against Ipswich, the City loanee intercepted a pass, spotted the keeper off his line and, from the back of the centre circle, lifted a lob that clipped the underside of the bar and in. LeicesterMercury.co.uk reports that it was a standout strike in a losing cause.

It came in his 29th senior appearance and was his first goal. Newport have taken just two points from five matches since City title-winner Christian Fuchs took charge, and they sit bottom of League Two, five points adrift.

Fuchs said: “It’s not only on his shoulders. That would be too much to ask. Everybody needs to pull the same way.”

“Since I’ve come in, there’s been a lot of good things happening even if the results haven’t gone our way yet. It’s the responsibility of everybody. I believe in us that we can turn it around.”

Braybrooke might have only two games left at Rodney Parade, at home to Barnet and Crewe, with his loan due to expire at month’s end. City must decide whether to extend his stay, seek a higher-division loan, or recall him to integrate into Marti Cifuentes’ squad. For now, staying at Newport seems most likely, with Cifuentes happy with his regular football and focused on the 21-year-old’s long-term development.
