Atlético are trimming their squad ahead of new signings. Antoine Grizmann’s switch to Orlando City was the first departure, and Clément Lenglet is set to be the second as he heads for Benfica.
Lenglet travelled to Lisbon on Monday to finalise the move once pre-transfer formalities, including a medical, are complete. According to Récord, he said he was very happy about the imminent move and had spoken with president Rui Costa and head coach Marco Silva before agreeing to proceed.
The French defender is under contract at Atlético until 30 June 2028. He will sign a new three-year deal with Benfica to 2029.
The 31-year-old has spent two seasons at Atlético, 24-26, the first on loan from Barcelona. Barcelona had previously loaned him to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
He was at Camp Nou for four seasons, 2018-22, making 160 appearances and winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa. Barcelona signed him from Sevilla for 35.9 million.
