Samson Baidoo felt pain in his left thigh and was substituted during Lens’s 2-2 friendly draw with Charleroi on Saturday.
According to L'Équipe, the Austrian defender, 22, missed more than two months earlier in 2026, including the Coupe de France final against Nice, which finished 3-1. He had hoped to restart his Lens adventure with the Champions League in sight.
In a sold-out Avion crowd of 4,300, he grimaced while chasing a routine ball, then reached for his left thigh before going to ground, moments later touching his hamstrings.
Head coach Dino Toppmöler said it was unfortunate and that the nature of the problem is unknown, with ultrasound and MRI needed. He added he had not spoken to the player as Baidoo was too disappointed, and stressed patience given last year’s issues.
A diagnosis is expected by Monday. He should not travel with the squad on Monday morning to Italy for a training camp at Monza. There is hope it is not a recurrence of problems that had been a point of tension during Pierre Sage’s tenure.
