Abendzeitung reports that Leon Goretzka has opted to stay at Bayern Munich until the end of the season for sporting reasons.

Atlético Madrid, long linked with the midfielder, were ready to match his Bayern salary for the rest of the campaign. He sees a chance to add major honours, including a second Champions League, a seventh Bundesliga and possibly a treble.

He does not want to miss what could be an outstanding campaign and aims to depart Bavaria on a high after eight years at the club.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has already confirmed that Goretzka will leave as a free agent next summer.

After returning to the national team last March, the 30-year-old is also wary of jeopardising his World Cup prospects. He fears a mid-season switch to a new club and league could hurt his chances of reaching what might be his last major tournament for Germany.
