Leonardo Balerdi ruled out of 2026 World Cup after Argentina training injury

Leonardo Balerdi will miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering a right calf injury in Argentina training. The Olympique de Marseille defender has 11 caps.

He was hurt on Friday evening during the Albiceleste’s final session before a friendly against Honduras and had to cut the workout short. According to L'Équipe, the national team sent him best wishes on Saturday.

Early indications from the United States had hinted at a possible return during the tournament, with several Argentine outlets estimating a two to three week lay-off. The staff have chosen not to take that risk.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni will name a replacement before Argentina face Algeria on 17 June at 3am.

The incoming player must be selected from the 55-player preliminary list.
