Flamengo won the Campeonato Carioca on Sunday, beating Fluminense 5-4 on penalties at the Maracanã. According to Coluna Do Fla, coach Leonardo Jardim stressed the competition's importance and said only those who lose devalue it.
He maintained that anyone working at Flamengo must target the Carioca, that winners give it value and that winning it is fundamental. He said there is still a path ahead, and they would work harder and better to organise a competent team, as last year.
Flamengo began the state campaign with their under-20s while the senior squad prepared for the season, and at one stage qualification was in doubt.
The first team came in for round four against Vasco and won 1-0. A run of key results carried them into the knockout phase.
They then eliminated Botafogo and Madureira. Despite reaching the final, the club dismissed Filipe Luís and appointed Jardim in that window.
