Speaking after the match, the former Monaco coach called the campaign an emotional failure, noting he had not won a title and describing it as among the biggest failures of his life. He added that he likes to win and did not win at Cruzeiro.

The reasons for his exit have not been disclosed, and he is due to address the situation at a news conference at 17:00 French time. On Sunday night he said it was a day of mourning for the Cruzeiro family and that talks about his future would follow on Monday.

The Portuguese, who won Ligue 1 with Monaco in 2017, led the Belo Horizonte side to third place this season, their best finish since the 2014 title, earning a first Copa Libertadores spot since 2019.
