Jardim led Monaco for more than five years, from July 2014 to December 2019. He worked with Kylian Mbappé, then 17, João Moutinho and Bernardo Silva, now at Manchester City.

He oversaw 270 matches, recording 141 wins, 61 draws and 68 defeats, a 59.7% record. In 2016/17 Monaco won Ligue 1, and reached the Champions League semi-finals, losing 4-1 to Juventus.

Talks with Flamengo had been ongoing even while Filipe Luís was in charge. The board informed Filipe Luís of his dismissal after receiving the Portuguese’s approval.

Jardim’s first game is due on Sunday 8, when Flamengo face Fluminense at Maracanã at 18:00 Brasília time in the Campeonato Carioca final.
