Leroy Sané put Germany ahead inside the second minute against Ecuador in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Thursday night, in a move that sparked controversy.

According to L'Équipe, the goal could have been disallowed for an earlier foul by Aleksandar Pavlovic in the build-up.

Moments before the finish, Pavlovic’s foot caught Pedro Vite on the head, then Pavlovic won his duel and found Florian Wirtz, who provided the assist for Sané.

Ecuador protested, but referee Tori Penso and the VAR did not intervene, and the goal stood.

Ecuador levelled soon after through a powerful strike from Nilson Angulo of Sunderland. Willian Pacho’s side must win to reach the round of 32, while Germany are already assured of finishing top of Group E.
