The international break was pretty painful for Chelsea, but was perhaps even worse for the Republic of Ireland. Their dream of making it to the World Cup this summer was crushed in Prague, where they threw away a 2-0 lead and ultimately lost on penalties.

To make things worse, they could soon have Liam Delap playing for them. The Sun today claim that the Chelsea striker, who has one league goal this season, is being courted by the Republic to change his international allegiance from England.

We’d imagine it will take a while – Delap is still only 23 and probably still has hopes of representing the Three Lions after playing for their youth teams. But long term, unless his club form changes dramatically, an England callup feels a long way away.

“It’s in Liam’s corner, as they say. Let’s wait and see,” said Ireland assistant (and former teammate of Delap’s father) John O’Shea.

“He hasn’t played for England and it doesn’t look like he is going to the World Cup, it looks like he is far away from that.”

The international break was supposed to be a chance to reset and regroup – but it’s proved to be the opposite.

Chelsea have been linked with young talent Eduardo Conceicao, who could follow the same path as Estevao Willian.
