Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro regrets missing out on Filipe Luís, leaves door open | OneFootball

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro said the club came close to appointing Filipe Luís after his Flamengo exit, and he has left the door open for the future.

"I believe we were very close because we met him several times. We have an excellent relationship with Filipe Luís. Both Simon Rolfes and I think he is an excellent coach, and still very young," Carro said, speaking to GE.

"I believe he will have a great career as a coach, with many years ahead, and in football there are always other opportunities. We continue to have a good relationship with him, and I wish him the best in the project he has now. The doors will always be open."

Talks with Leverkusen ended without agreement, and Filipe Luís has since signed with Monaco until June 2028. His target is to take the club into the next UEFA Champions League and, perhaps, challenge PSG for the title.

He has overseen one friendly so far, a 5-2 win over Saint-Priest last week. Monaco face Sporting on Saturday 25 from 15:30 Brasília time.

Leverkusen have appointed Carles Martínez, 42, instead. The former Barcelona youth coach has managed only one senior side, Toulouse, between 2023 and 2026.
