Leverkusen ‘to consider’ Weston McKennie as next Xhaka option

According to Sport Bild, Leverkusen are showing strong interest in Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie as they search for the next Xhaka.

The hunt follows the Swiss international’s move to Sunderland last summer.

Leverkusen are also keeping tabs on TSG Hoffenheim’s Grischa Prömel, though they reportedly rate him below McKennie. Despite 140 Bundesliga appearances, it remains unclear whether Prömel would lift the team’s level.

Sporting director Simon Rolfes is said to be more intrigued by McKennie, formerly of Schalke 04. The American is younger, has Champions League experience, and his contract in Turin expires next summer.

The push for a new midfielder is linked not only to sporting needs but also to transfer rumours surrounding Aleix Garcia.
