Liverpool Interest in Lamine Camara and Yankuba Minteh Raises 2027 Questions

Liverpool have barely closed the book on one transfer window and attention is already turning towards Lamine Camara and Yankuba Minteh.

Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters, Lewis Steele discussed reports linking Liverpool with both players for future windows, while warning how quickly transfer plans can change.

The most intriguing name is Camara, particularly after Liverpool decided against strengthening their midfield during the summer.

Davis referenced reports that Camara would have been Liverpool’s preferred option had Alexis Mac Allister departed, before turning to Minteh, who was the subject of unsuccessful Liverpool bids during the summer.

For Steele, talking about 2027 already comes with an obvious warning.

“A lot can change,” he said.

Lamine Camara Situation Puzzles Steele

Camara provides the more curious case because Steele had been checking Liverpool’s position on the midfielder shortly before the transfer deadline.

“I think the Lamine Camara one’s really interesting because it felt like he was offered to Liverpool,” Steele told Davis.

Steele explained that when he checked Liverpool’s position towards the end of the window, the response was emphatic.

“I remember checking, was it probably last Thursday or Friday, and was just told absolutely not. We’re not signing a midfielder.”

That stance was consistent with what Steele and fellow Liverpool reporter David Lynch had heard throughout the summer.

“That was the word all summer. We’re not signing a midfielder,” Steele said.

Liverpool ultimately stuck to that position.

Steele, however, believes Liverpool needed another midfielder and understood the frustration surrounding their decision to proceed without one.

“I feel like they needed a midfielder as well, but they decided to keep the powder dry for whatever reason.”

Liverpool Move Next Summer Would Raise Questions

The possibility of Liverpool subsequently returning for Camara creates an obvious question.

“If they do end up signing Camara, I don’t understand it because he was available now,” Steele said.

That is particularly significant given the wider discussion around Liverpool’s squad.

Steele believes Andoni Iraola would ideally have received another midfielder during the summer, alongside reinforcement elsewhere. He suggested Liverpool could have bought a midfielder rather than requiring Iraola to find internal solutions.

The Camara link therefore potentially represents a position Liverpool could revisit.

Steele did, however, leave open the possibility of circumstances forcing Liverpool into action sooner.

“Maybe it’s all highlighted in the next few months how drastic the problem is and they go for him in January,” he said.

Yankuba Minteh Remains Liverpool Name to Watch

Minteh represents a different situation.

Liverpool actively pursued attacking reinforcements during the summer, and Davis noted that bids for the Brighton winger had been rejected. The discussion came after reports suggesting Minteh could still have Liverpool ambitions despite remaining with Brighton.

Steele was cautious about assuming any future deal will happen.

Looking at transfer speculation this far in advance, he explained: “It’s probably a silly conversation to be having so early, but people are obviously interested in it.”

Liverpool’s pursuit of attacking players during the summer nevertheless provides context.

When discussing Richard Hughes’ transfer strategy elsewhere in the podcast, Steele referred specifically to the unsuccessful attempts to sign attacking targets, including Minteh.

“He seemed to put all his eggs in the basket of signing forwards,” Steele said, referring to several pursuits that “ultimately all led to nothing”.

Liverpool eventually strengthened their attack through other deals, leaving Steele impressed by the attacking options now available to Iraola.

Camara and Minteh therefore represent two very different potential future moves.

One would address a midfield position Steele believes Liverpool should already have strengthened. The other would revive interest in a player Liverpool attempted to sign before moving elsewhere.

For now, Steele’s warning remains the sensible starting point.

“A lot can change.”
