Derby County fans could be in August dreamland if these three potential signings get over the line
Derby County fans could be in August dreamland with three potential signings coming to Pride Park.
Derby have certainly had a busy summer when it comes to transfers, with the likes of Carlton Morris, Rhian Brewster, and Andreas Weimann coming in the door. However, Rams boss John Eustace isn't done just yet.
Following their goals-galore 3-5 defeat to Coventry City at the weekend, Eustace, in his post-match interview, stressed the importance of getting new faces in the door, especially in wide areas.
Eustace said via Derbyshire Live: "I think you can see today we changed our structure because we didn't really have any wide players available."
He went on to say: "We still want to bring in some players in midfield to help us in that area as well... There are still areas we need to improve."
With the Rams yet to get off the mark so far this Championship campaign, Eustace will want to do business fast, and to turn the tide in their favour with the transfer deadline just around the corner.
Derby have been heavily linked with three players that could give the Rams a fresh look, combining stability and experience with youth and dynamism.
Eustace suffered a major blow in Derby's Championship opening day defeat against Stoke, as left-winger Corey Blackett-Taylor sustained a hamstring injury that will see him sidelined for the next six weeks.
This has emphasised the club's need for reinforcements in wide areas, as Eustace expressed after the Coventry fixture. He opted to switch from his usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a five at the back on the day due to his lack of natural wide players available for selection.
One player that could help fill the void is Koki Saito, who spent last season on loan at QPR. The Japanese international sought to impress against the Rams last season as he scored in the Hoops' 4-0 win at Loftus Road.
It has been reported via Daily Telegraph journalist, Mike McGrath, that Derby are front-runners to sign the winger, which will surely get the fans at Pride Park excited.
Saito's ability to link up play and natural creativity could well aid the performance of the Rams front line and get star-man Morris firing this season.
Another man on Derby's radar is Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from Ewood Park to Pride Park, with the Lancashire Telegraph reporting that his heart lies with a move away from the club he has spent 10 years with.
Despite a deal not yet being agreed, progress has been made, and it seems likely that Eustace will reunite with Travis and get the midfielder he craves.
It is claimed via Derbyshire Live that Blackburn have set their asking price of £3m for their midfield veteran, which Derby look willing to meet after Travis was left out of the Blackburn side that was on the wrong end of a 1-2 defeat to Birmingham on Saturday.
Travis could become a staple in the Rams' midfield that has been ever-changing at the start of this season. It would be a transfer that would be welcomed due to the reliability factor his name brings.
Scottish defender Max Johnston is one of the key names that Eustace wants to bring to Pride Park this summer after catching the eye for Austrian side Sturm Graz.
It's been reported, as per journalist, Alan Nixon, that Derby County have been told to pay £2m for the right-back, however the Rams have a contact proposal in place and are willing to pay £1.6m for his signature.
The right-back area doesn't seem to be of major concern to Eustace with Ryan Nyambe making a positive start in that position early this season. However, the 21-year-old certainly looks like one for the future, having already got Champions League experience under his belt with Sturm Graz.
Eustace told Derbyshire Live: "Obviously, we have Ryan (Nyambe), and we've got Kane Wilson coming back as well in the next two or three weeks. I think with the cover Dion (Sanderson) now gives, it allows us now to concentrate on other areas."
As the Rams look to complete at least another couple of signings with just shy of two weeks left of the transfer window, Eustace's priorities lie in the heart of midfield and in the wide areas. With these three names at the top of their targets, the prospect of new faces could raise the hopes of Rams fans as they look to kickstart their season.
