Hull City are set to re-sign Liam Cooper following his departure from Leeds United earlier this summer.

That's according to journalist Darren Witcoop, who has provided an update on the future of the centre-back.

Cooper is currently a free agent after leaving Leeds earlier in the summer, following the expiration of his contract with the club.

Previously, he had come through the academy ranks with Hull, before starting his senior career with the Tigers in 2008.

Now, over ten years since he departed the club, it looks as though Cooper could now be set for a return to the MKM Stadium.

Liam Cooper to re-sign for Hull City

During his first spell with the Tigers, Cooper made 17 first-team appearances in all competitions for the club.

He would also spend time out on loan with the likes of Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town and Chesterfield.

Cooper then left Hull in 2013 to join Chesterfield on a permanent basis, and a year later would complete a move to Leeds United.

The centre-back remained at Elland Road until this summer, when he departed after his contract expired.

Earlier in the summer, it had been reported that Cooper had held talks about a move to Blackburn Rovers, although no deal materialised.

Instead, the 32-year-old is now set for a move elsewhere in the Championship, with this latest update claiming he will make a return to Hull.

Indeed, BBC Humberside reporter Mike White has claimed that a deal has been agreed, and that Cooper watched Hull's 0-0 draw with Millwall on Saturday from owner Acun Ilicali's private box.

That result gave the Tigers their third point from three Championship games so far this season, putting them 14th in the early standings.

In a somewhat remarkable coincidence in these circumstances, Hull are next in action with a trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United next Saturday.

Already this summer, the Tigers have completed the signings of no fewer than ten new senior players in a busy transfer market.

Ryan Giles, Marvin Mehlem, Liam Millar, Mason Burstow, Cody Drameh, Anthony Racioppi and Charlie Hughes have all signed permanently.

Meanwhile, Finley Burns, Oscar Zambrano and Chris Bedia have signed on loan from Manchester City, LDU Quito and Union Berlin respectively.

Liam Cooper may be a useful addition for the Tigers

There is an argument that this could be a good signing for Hull to make if it is indeed confirmed by the club.

Admittedly, Tim Walter's side are not particularly short on central defensive options at this moment in time.

However, Cooper has plenty of pedigree at this level, and has been around for much longer than their other centre-backs, so could offer them something different.

Indeed, the experience he possesses could make him a useful asset to help guide younger players in that position such as Hughes and Burns.

Meanwhile, given he is now a free agent, there should not be much financial risk associated with this deal for the Tigers.
