Leeds United promotion hero Liam Cooper suffered a groin injury in the Steel City derby for Sheffield Wednesday, leaving his season in serious doubt.

According to The Star, the issue is significant and could rule the 34-year-old out of Wednesday’s remaining 13 Championship fixtures.

Cooper started at Bramall Lane against former Leeds team-mates Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, but the centre-back was withdrawn with 10 minutes remaining.

He joined Wednesday as a free agent in November after leaving CSKA Sofia earlier last year, signing a short-term deal until the end of the season. He has made 14 Championship appearances and scored once.

Wednesday, hampered by multiple points deductions and financial problems, were relegated on Sunday after defeat at rivals Sheffield United.

With his contract expiring this summer, that match could prove his final outing for the South Yorkshire club. His future is unclear, and he turns 35 in August after recent injury issues at Wednesday and previously at CSKA Sofia, where he cut short his deal.

Even so, Cooper has played 41 games in all competitions since leaving Leeds and might feel he can extend his career into his late 30s. He was a positive influence on a young Wednesday squad and attracted plenty of Championship interest when departing Elland Road in summer 2024.
