The Owls are looking to tie down the 34-year-old ahead of next season

Sheffield Wednesday's Championship season has been well-documented, with the club currently the only side in the division aware of their fate heading into 2026/27.

The Owls are still on minus-six points with seven matches of what has been an arduous campaign - for so many reasons - left to play, and the main aim for Henrik Pedersen and his players at Hillsborough is certainly to end on a positive points total.

Aside from on-pitch matters, it comes as no surprise that it is takeover-related headlines which continue to dominate the Wednesday-themed ether as things stand, and there have certainly been encouraging signs of progress on this particular front as the season reaches its conclusion.

The Owls have been in administration since October 24th, when they were placed into the hands of Begbies Traynor by former chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, amid fears of a winding-up petition in S6.

Wednesday were, unsurprisingly, predicted by the majority of Championship onlookers to finish rock-bottom of the table, as a result of the fact that a mass exodus of senior professionals in the summer and a handful of transfer or registration-related bans and restrictions had left the Dane extremely hamstrung when it came to attracting new players to the club.

However, it has been claimed that some of those restrictions may be eased heading into next season's League One campaign as American, David Storch, holds hope that Arise Capital Partners' takeover can be finalised before the summer transfer window opens for business on Monday, June 15th.

As such, it is no real surprise that preparations for next season have already begun in this part of the world, with Pedersen also keen to tie down some of his most seasoned campaigners for what lies ahead.

Sheffield Wednesday looking to extend Liam Cooper's contract ahead of League One season

One of the very few additions Pedersen was able to make this season came in the form of ex-Leeds United captain, Liam Cooper.

The centre-back had left Bulgarian side, Levski Sofia, last August after joining the Eastern European outfit following his exit from Elland Road, but returned to his native Yorkshire in mid-November on a contract which runs until the end of the season.

Although it has been well-documented that Wednesday also have the worst defensive record in the Championship, conceding 79 times in 39 games, the 34-year-old has impressed those at Hillsborough in such a short timeframe, despite the fact he suffered a groin injury in February which has kept him sidelined for the last six games, and he is expected to miss the final weeks of the season with said issue.

As such, it has been reported by Joe Crann via The Wednesday Word that the Owls are looking to extend the 19-time Scotland international's contract for next season in the third tier, where he once plied his trade with Chesterfield, with the hope that Storch will be the club's new investor by that point.

It has also been stated that staff in the Steel City have also valued Cooper's potential to become a coach in the coming years as part of the thought process.

Sheffield Wednesday, Liam Cooper decision makes complete sense after Henrik Pedersen revelations

Given Cooper's experience and leadership, it feels like a no-brainer for Wednesday to keep the defender at Hillsborough for next season.

The decision also makes sense for all involved, given recent comments from Pedersen on the Hull-born man, with the Owls boss revealing: "“For Liam Cooper, he’d really, really love to stay here, he’d really love to be a part of Sheffield Wednesday.

“He loves his daily life at Sheffield Wednesday.

“He also expressed that he can also see himself as a part of the future of Sheffield Wednesday," Pedersen added.

It still remains to be seen whether the club will start next season on -15 points or not and have a potential wage cap, but this is still a decision which, unsurprisingly, many Wednesdayites are backing.
