Gui Siqueira has been sidelined for the remainder of the Owls' season
Sheffield Wednesday's Liam Palmer and Pierce Charles have been among those reacting to Gui Siqueira's recent social media post, with the young defender now sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.
The 20-year-old defender was dealt a crushing blow on Monday when it was revealed that a serious achilles injury would keep him out of action long-term as the Owls look to prove all the doubters and odds wrong by surviving in the Championship amid a backdrop of continuous and well-documented issues concerning controversial owner, Dejphon Chansiri.
It is also another blow to new head coach Henrik Pedersen, who, as a result of the aforementioned issues, has been dealt the toughest of hands, with the South Yorkshire side effectively down to the bare bones when it comes to squad depth, having been placed under a transfer fee restriction by the EFL, whilst the governing body monitored transfer activity in and out of Hillsborough via the Club Financial Reporting Unit (CRFU).
Those on the pitch, including Siqueira, have drawn mass praise from Wednesday supporters, outsiders and pundits for their commitment to the cause despite a disrupted pre-season in S6, and such spirit and togetherness was once again exemplified on the defender's Instagram profile earlier this week.
Siqueira has been on the books in South Yorkshire, officially, since the summer of 2023 following the Owls' return back to the Championship after defeating Barnsley in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
The Brazilian defender signed his first professional contract with the club under Xisco Munoz after an initial trial period with Wednesday's Under-18 side, before his stay in the Steel City was extended at the back end of last season, with the aforementioned first senior deal of his career initially expiring back in June.
However, due to the threadbare squad at Pedersen's disposal in the early weeks of the season, Siqueira - who had previously made three FA Cup appearances under Danny Rohl in 2023/24 - was named as a substitute against Leicester City and Swansea City in the Championship, as well as showcasing his potential in the EFL Cup victories over Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.
Indeed, the full-back scored the Goal of the Round for a stunning long-range effort in the eventual penalty shootout win at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. However, he confirmed the devastating news of his injury blow on Instagram, with plenty of current and former teammates sending their wishes in the comments.
"Devastated to say that my season is over. Surgery was a success but now a long road to recovery," Siqueira posted.
"One moment it can feel like the best day of your life and a couple weeks after the worst. I will be back stronger."
Among those in the comments were Charles, who is also sidelined for an extensive period following a shoulder injury, who replied: ❤️🙌
Palmer, who has made 469 appearances for the Owls after progressing through the ranks at Hillsborough also posted a response of: ❤️
The likes of Bailey Cadamarteri, Akin Famewo, Rio Shipston and Gabriel Otegbayo show how highly thought of Siqueira is by his current and former teammates, as he now begins a lengthy road to recovery.
As mentioned previously, the Danish boss is extremely limited when it comes to adequate squad depth and experience to bring off the bench, meaning Wednesday cannot afford to suffer any more long-term injury woes.
Whilst Pedersen was able to somewhat soften Charles' shoulder issue with the loan signing of Ethan Horvath from Cardiff City, the same course of action cannot be taken in order to bolster their defensive depth, unless done on a free transfer and eventually approved by the EFL.
Such luck sums up the current predicament which the Owls currently find themselves in, and Siqueira will also be devastated to lose the chance of showcasing his talent in the second-tier on a regular basis throughout the campaign also, having previously been on the books of divisional rivals, Queens Park Rangers.
