Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior praised Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo after his side’s dramatic 4-2 extra-time victory over Wrexham in the FA Cup fifth round.
Lavia, making his first start in over four months, played 65 minutes before being replaced by Essugo. He assisted both of Chelsea’s goals in extra time on his first appearance of the season.
Speaking after the game, Rosenior was quick to highlight the duo’s impact and their importance for the remainder of the season.
“We are coming into a period of games where Romeo Lavia can be really important for us,” said Rosenior as quoted by Chelsea’s official website.
“He has to play minutes. We have to get him up to speed, and we have to give Dario Essugo the time on the pitch. They were very good.”
Rosenior emphasised that while Chelsea’s squad is deep, getting players like Lavia and Essugo up to speed is vital to the club’s pursuit of silverware and a top-four Premier League finish.
“For them to both get sixty minutes in is brilliant because we will need everyone for the run-in,” he added.
Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Joao Pedro eventually ended Wrexham’s FA Cup fairytale.
Chelsea moved into the FA Cup quarter-finals, making it back-to-back victories ahead of their trip to France to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16.
