After last night’s painful 5-2 defeat to PSG, Liam Rosenior was asked if the tie was effectively over. Chelsea had looked capable of winning the match at 2-2, but a late collapse turned the tie into a disaster.

In a moment of quite raw honesty, Rosenior came close to admitting it was close to game over:

“Even at 4-2, because of the quality of chances we were creating from our build moments, from our possession moments, even at 4-2 [we were in it], Rosenior admitted.

“I’m not saying it’s the best result for us at all, but we’re still right in this at home at Stamford Bridge. [But] the fifth goal, that’s the painful, painful one.”

Chelsea close to done in Champions League admits Rosenior

That’s as close as you’ll get to a manager saying his team are out of the tie. We’re sure his rhetoric will all have changed by next week, when the focus will all be on “getting the first goal”, but this was the moment we got some real honesty from him.

The mental weakness that has showed up in other ways this season, was evident here in the way his team lost their heads and couldn’t staunch the bleeding. Rosenior also had to admit this was something he needed to address:

“Yeah, it’s something I really have to solve because we are very close, very close to being an outstanding team but we have to overcome this hurdle yesterday to make sure that happens.

In transfer rumour news, another talented Bundesliga winger is on Chelsea’s radar at the moment, after an impressive season.
