Weekend action began in Querétaro as the home side suffered a sixth successive defeat in the league. Facing the league leaders, it was always going to be an uphill battle but Los Azules scored in added time of both halves to head back to the top of the league, having conceded one goal across their opening five league games. Next weekend they will replay the 2024 Clausura final against América in a derby of the capital.
Drama ensued as Mazatlán manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich became the third highest wins of any manager ever in Liga MX history. Luís Sanchez opened the scoring before Brian Rubio doubled their lead, but the win was all but confirmed before the halftime whistle when Salómon Róndon and Gustavo Cabral were handed straight red cards, reducing Pachuca to 9 men. Adding insult to injury, Josúe Colman scored a third moments before the break. This was their first win of the season, despite reaching the Leagues Cup quarter final.
Despite taking the lead twice, Tijuana and Monterrey faced off in the north with Los Rayados failing to hold on. Germán Berterame opened the scoring, building on the news last week that Javier Aguirre would select him for the Mexican national team. However, Christian Rivera levelled things from the spot before Brandon Vazquez gave Monterrey the lead for a second time in the game. The second half flew by but in the 99th minute, Los Xolos found a breakthrough via Jose Zuniga, spoiling the party for the visitors who looked set for a second straight win under new manager Martín Demichelis.
Necaxa returned to winning ways after a 5-0 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes in the Leagues Cup. Jose Prandela scored from the penalty spot before two kick-fire goals from Alan Montes and Tomas Badaloni confirmed the win as Juárez continue their search for a first win of the season.
Atlas and Pumas were both undefeated before this game but it was the Guadalajara side who were able to continue their run. Cesar Huerta missed a penalty in the first 10 minutes but fortunes continued to favour the home side when a reflected shot hit the back of Pumas goalkeeper Julio González and found its way into the back of the net. Jhon Murillo managed to double their lead in the second half before Ignacio Pussetto scored on his Pumas debut with a long-range effort to give the visitors a late consolation goal.
León and Santos Laguna had to settle for a point with both sides scoring in the first half. Ivan Moreno gave the hosts the lead before Ramiro Sordo levelled things 20 minutes later. Both sides remain outside of playoff contention, but León remain two points away.
The biggest shock of the weekend came at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes when Puebla managed to beat Club América 1-0. Las Águilas had not lost this fixture in 17 attempts, stretching back to 2018. However, they lacked attacking creativity as Puebla remained defensively defiant, whilst creating the best chances of the first half. The decisivie moment came in the 75th minute when Raúl Castillo stabbed home to beat Luís Malagón. A third loss in five means that Puebla leapfrogged their weekend opponents whilst América sit in 12th.
The final game of the weekend came at the Estadio Nemesio Díez as Toluca secured a third win in five, jumping up into 3rd place. Jesús Gallardo gave Los Diablos Rojos the lead, before San Luís responded through Luís Najera. The home side got themselves ahead for the second time in the game through striker Paulinho, netting his fourth goal in five games since joining the club from Sporting Lisbon.
