After finishing fourth last season, Olympique Lyonnais and coach Paulo Fonseca want to raise the bar, but rebuilding, finances and Europe mean they must find balance quickly.

According to L'Équipe, Lyon face budget limits as Fonseca begins year three. They need a formula for high stakes games while fighting for a Champions League berth that would ease the books.

Sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean is working within tighter limits, cannot match demands when free agents such as Sunderland’s Thomas Meunier seek a signing bonus. Typical salaries now sit around 100 to 150 000 € gross per month.

Champions League participation would be worth 45 M€ across all revenue streams, well over double the Europa League. At minimum, Lyon will play in the Europa League if they do not get past Sparta Prague or any subsequent two legged play off. This will be their 38th straight Ligue 1 season, with Paris Saint-Germain on 53 in a row, Rennes 33, Marseille 31 and Lille 27.
