This close-season could bring a 21st-century high for Ligue 1 coaching changes, with three clubs acting before May ends.
According to L'Équipe, Toulouse have replaced Carles Martinez Novell with Jens Berthel Askou from Motherwell in Scotland. Lille, who finished third and will play in next season's Champions League, saw Bruno Genesio resign on Monday, with Davide Ancelotti tipped to succeed him, and Lorient’s post is vacant after talks with Olivier Pantaloni collapsed.
The off-season record this century is nine, set in 2002-2003, 2009-10 and 2021-2022, with 20 teams. In 18-team seasons the mark is seven, in 2001-2002 and 2024-2025.
At Auxerre, president Baptiste Malherbe is asking owner James Zhou to keep Christophe Pelissier after talk of a sacking. At Monaco, Sébastien Pocognoli is close to being replaced by Filipe Luis, and at Marseille Habib Beye’s future is uncertain. That would make six.
Brest and Angers could also switch despite their coaches being under contract. Angers manager Alexandre Dujeux said he is reflecting on his position. Didier Digard’s deal is expiring and he has yet to decide.
Nice’s situation appears tied to survival, they face Saint-Etienne in the play-off. The first leg finished 0-0 at Geoffroy-Guichard.
PSG, Lens, Lyon, Rennes, Strasbourg, Paris FC, Le Mans and Troyes are not expected to change coach.
Across the campaign just ended, excluding caretakers, eight clubs changed coach. With eight, 2025-2026 sets a 21st-century high for an 18-team league, behind only 2004-2005 with 11 and 2015-16 and 2022-23 with 10, all in 20-team seasons.
