RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangaré has been named winner of the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé for this Ligue 1 season, with Monaco’s Lamine Camara runner-up and OL defender Moussa Niakhaté in third.
According to Le Progres, the Malian international becomes the first from his country to claim the honour, which rewards the league’s best African player and has been presented annually by RFI since 2009.
Sangaré succeeds PSG and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi.
The award commemorates former Cameroon and OL midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé, who died in June 2003 after a cardiac arrest during a Confederations Cup match between Cameroon and Colombia at Gerland.
Foé remains revered by Lyon supporters, having won the French title with the club in 2002.
No African player currently at OL has yet received this prize.
