Flamengo are close to announcing Leonardo Jardim as their new head coach, after holding talks before dismissing Filipe Luís on Tuesday, according to Coluna Do Fla.

Ligue 1’s official account referenced his Monaco spell. It posted a photo of Jardim in a red and black jacket, the Flamengo colours, with a caption greeting the Nação and saying he was already in red and black.

Jardim led Monaco from July 2014 to December 2019, overseeing 270 matches, 141 wins, 61 draws and 68 defeats, a 59.7% record. He also won the national title in 2016/17.

Flamengo had prioritised Jardim and continued talks even while Filipe Luís was in charge. The board then acted after receiving the Portuguese coach’s approval.

Jardim will sign a two-year deal to December 2027, and is expected to arrive in Rio on Tuesday to complete formalities and meet the squad.

His first assignment is due this Sunday when Flamengo face Fluminense at 18:00 Brasília time at Maracanã in the Campeonato Carioca final.

Globo, GE TV on YouTube, SporTV and Premiere will broadcast the final.
