Ligue 3 launches coach-activated Football Vidéo Support for limited reviews | OneFootball

Ligue 3 kicks off on Friday at 20:45 with the arrival of Football Vidéo Support, a coach-activated review system. The rebranded third tier, formerly National 1, will use the system this season.

According to Le Progres, FVS will be in use from the opening-night multiplex and functions similarly to basketball-style challenges.

The tool allows teams to request reviews of a limited number of incidents using broadcast footage, and is lighter than Ligue 1’s VAR. Introduced by FIFA in youth events, it featured at the last Under-20 World Cup.

The head coach signals by twirling a finger and presenting a card to the fourth official, who then notifies the referee of a challenge. Reviews can be sought only for potential clear errors or serious missed incidents.

The coach of the aggrieved team must declare one of four categories: goal scored or wrongly disallowed, penalty given or not, red card decision, or mistaken identity.

Each coach has two challenges per match. A successful challenge preserves the right to go again, an unsuccessful one forfeits it.

The innovation may interrupt rhythm, but contentious moments can now be revisited.
