Portugal beat hosts Croatia 3-2 on Sunday afternoon to win the Vlatko Markovic tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo Junior was decisive for the Seleção in the final, scoring two goals with Rafael Cabral netting the winner.
Portugal’s first three games in the tournament had resulted in wins over Japan (4-1) and England (2-1) and a draw against Greece (1-1), thus earning in a place in the final against the host country.
The 14-year-old Cristianinho had played in all three games after being called up to represent Portugal for the first time by coach João Santos, but the forward had yet to find the net.
That all changed in the final with Ronaldo Junior twice giving Portugal the lead. His first goal was a crisp left-foot finish that crashed into the net off the bar after being neatly set up by Carlos Moita.
His second goal was a simple header into an open goal, Moita again providing the assist.
Twice Croatia came back to equalise but Portugal would not be denied, Rafael Cabral scoring a superb winner, controlling the ball with his right foot before smashing in a left-foot shot.
Portugal have a strong tradition in youth team football, winning multiple trophies at various age levels and all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo Junior in the coming years as he attempts to follow in his father’s footsteps.
It was an auspicious start to life as Portugal player.
