Portsmouth look unlikely to secure a deal with Ipswich Town over the services of defender George Edmundson, 27, after failing to bring him to Fratton Park in January.

That's according to BBC South journalist Andrew Moon, who has said on his X account that it is now "not impossible but not that likely" that Edmundson will join John Mousinho's squad this summer.

Pompey tried to bring the Manchester-born defender in to help their promotion push last season, but he committed his future to the Suffolk club after a 2-1 home win against Sunderland.

In the press conference, he said: "I love it here, I love the manager, the lads and I obviously think there is only one direction the club is going, and I know every club says that, but I think Ipswich really, really mean it.

"I feel like it’s the place to be at the minute so I don’t get why you’d leave."

The 27-year-old played just 10 games last season as Ipswich were promoted to the Premier League, and failed to make the matchday squad in the Tractor Boys' first game in the top flight for 22 years, against Liverpool.

But even so, it appears a move to Fratton Park is not close – an update that will not be welcomed by Portsmouth supporters.

Edmundson's injury record is a concern

The 27-year-old has made just 20 appearances in the Championship, but that is not a fault of his own.

He spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Derby County and scored in just his third game. However, Edmundson was injured in a 1-0 loss to Millwall and missed all but the final three matches of the season as the Rams barely survived.

He made his other appearances in the division with Ipswich, but injuries severely disrupted his campaign, and he was forced to watch on from the stands for the vast majority of the season.

Nevertheless, he has been involved with sides at both ends of the table, ending up on the right side of history with both, and this experience could have been extremely useful for Portsmouth if a move happened.

But, with such a poor track record of staying fit and keeping away from the treatment room, Pompey may have struck it lucky by missing out - and moving on to a new saga could be more beneficial in the long run.

Other Portsmouth transfer updates

Moon also provided updates on other Portsmouth targets, with last season's star loanee Abu Kamara looking further and further away from a move back to Fratton Park from Norwich City.

The 21-year-old scored eight times and picked up 10 assists in League One in 2023/24, helping Mousinho's side to the league title.

A loan move for Freddie Potts from West Ham United is seemingly 50:50, according to the BBC South journalist, after he impressed at Wycombe Wanderers previously. Potts has made appearances for the Hammers in Europe before, and could be a fantastic signing.

Elsewhere, Brighton & Hove Albion's Mark O'Mahony is being chased by both Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday, and only time will tell for a decision to be announced over the 19-year-old striker's future.
