Angel Gomes (24) has confirmed media reports that he has suffered an injury. L’Équipe had reported that the Lille OSC midfielder would not feature again until 2025.
The Lille OSC midfielder, a mainstay under Paulo Fonseca and now new manager Bruno Genesio, broke into the England set-up this year, earning his first caps for the Three Lions under interim manager Lee Carsley. He has been part of a LOSC side that currently sit fourth in Ligue 1, one point away from third-placed Olympique de Marseille, whilst the Ligue 1 side have also enjoyed a strong start to their UEFA Champions League campaign, notably beating Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
However, ahead of this week’s encounter against Bologna, they have suffered a blow. Gomes missed the weekend win over Stade Rennais and he didn’t make the trip to the Emilia-Romagna region either as LOSC notched another win in the Champions League.
L’Équipe had reported that the England international had suffered a calf injury, and whilst Gomes did not confirm the nature of the injury, he did nonetheless confirm the existence of an injury in a post on X (formerly Twitter). In fact, the former Manchester United stated that he has been dealing with the injury for “several months”, revealing that it had “deeply affected [his] ability to perform to the level [he] holds [himself] at.”
He added that the decision to treat the injury, rather than playing through it, was a “difficult decision”. A return in 2025 is on the cards for Gomes, whose contract at Lille expires at the end of the campaign.
