Lille’s Angel Gomes: ‘I think I have the quality to play in the Champions League.’

Angel Gomes (23) is a different player from the one who arrived as a teenager on a free transfer, having failed to break through at formative club Manchester United. His profile has evolved, with the Englishman often featuring deeper in midfield, which attests to an accrued versatility during his time at Lille OSC.

However, with a contract that expires in 2025, questions are rightly being asked about Gomes’ Lille future this summer. Logically, it is the time either to extend or to leave. Speaking at the weekend, Gomes was evasive when questioned about his future with Les Dogues.

“For now, I’m thinking about finishing the season well,” said Gomes, in a press conference, transcribed by La Voix du Nord. There is a big question mark over the future of manager Paulo Fonseca, whose LOSC contract expires at the end of the season and also Lille’s finishing position.

Lille are chasing for UEFA Champions League football, and despite a 4-3 loss to Olympique Lyonnais on Monday, Fonseca’s side are still fourth, which would see them qualify for the qualification rounds of the prestigious competition. Gomes believes he “has the quality” to play in the competition.

“It has been a very positive season for me. I have improved many parts of my game. I think I have the quality to play in the Champions League,” said the England U21 international, who may compete in the competition next season, be it for Lille or for another team.
