Lily Yohannes has been named the Champions League revelation of the season after OL Lyonnes were beaten by Barcelona in the final in Oslo.

The 18-year-old midfielder joined last summer from Ajax and impressed with technique and an eye for goal. UEFA said the accolade recognises impactful individual performances, influence on the team, and progress and consistency at a young age.

Yohannes scored two goals in 10 appearances. She lobbed the keeper to seal a 3-0 league-phase win over St. Pölten, then opened the scoring in the quarter-final comeback against Wolfsburg, which finished 4-0 after extra time.

Her father was in Norway for her first major final and was visibly moved in the stands. The American international now follows in the footsteps of Melchie Dumornay, 22, twice voted the competition’s best young player.

OL Lyonnes are leaning on those generational talents, and others still maturing, in their push to reclaim Europe. Yohannes was not included in the Champions League team of the season, unlike Dumornay.

Three Lyon players made that XI, Selma Bacha, Wendie Renard and Dumornay, with five from Barcelona. Arsenal had two representatives, and Bayern Munich completed a side drawn solely from the four semi-finalists.
