Lincoln City set to beat Stoke City to late Ipswich Town transfer | OneFootball

The international winger spent 2025-26 on loan with Sheffield United and he's now set to return to the Championship with the newly-promoted Imps.

Lincoln City are set to sign the Republic of Ireland winger Chiedozie Ogbene on loan from Ipswich Town as they settle into their return to the Championship.

With a 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers over the Bank Holiday weekend, Lincoln City are starting to settle into life in the Championship. Following two successive defeats to start their season, the Imps lifted themselves to 17th place in the table.

With the transfer deadline now looming, Lincoln are amongst a host of clubs who are looking to bring in reinforcements before the window closes at 11pm on the 1st September, and there are now reports that they are set to beat Championship opposition in the form of Stoke City to the signature of the Ipswich Town and Republic of Ireland winger Chiedozie Ogbene.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has posted to the social media platform X that Chiedozie Ogbene is set to sign on loan for Lincoln City from Ipswich Town.

Stoke City, who had been closely linked with a move for the 29-year-old winger. It had been previously reported that they were close to a deal to take Ogbene to The Bet365 Stadium, with their manager Mark Robins looking to give himself extra options for the new season. There was also talk of the possibility of Charlton Athletic making a move for him.

Ogbene, who joined Ipswich from Luton Town for £8 million in the summer of 2024, has had a difficult time of things since his big money move to East Anglia, having suffered a serious achilles injury early on in his first season with the club, while they were in the Premier League.

Chiedozie Ogbene had a lot to look forward to when he first joined Ipswich Town from Luton Town in 2024. The winger had impressed at both Luton and his former club, Rotherham United, and with the Tractor Boys having claimed a place in the Premier League, he had an opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage in the world.

Things went badly wrong, however, when he tore his achilles tendon during a match against Brentford in November 2024. He was sidelined for nine months, and was sent on loan to Sheffield United for the 2025-26 season, only for injury to strike again, when a hamstring problem left him out again.

With Ipswich Town having returned to the Premier League and Ogbene now fit again, a move to Lincoln City gives the 29-year-old a chance to get his playing career back on track. He certainly seems to have learned from the experience, having told the BBC in a 2025 interview that his experience of injury had made him "wiser."

Having already played Premier League football for Luton Town and Ipswich Town, Ogbene is an experienced player, and if he can steer clear of the injuries that have blighted his last couple of seasons, he could give the Lincoln management team of Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw some valuable pace and width as they seek to build on their first Championship win in more than six decades.
