According to Globo.com, Jesse Lingard will wear the No 77 shirt at Corinthians, with the club finalising the last details before confirming the 33-year-old attacking midfielder’s signing.

He arrived in Brazil on Sunday morning and underwent a medical on Monday to sign a deal running until the end of this year. A clause provides automatic renewal through to the end of 2027 if set performance targets are met.

He will be the seventh addition of the season. Corinthians have already signed centre-back Gabriel Paulista, midfielders Matheus Pereira, Allan and Zakaria Labyad, right-back Pedro Milans and forward Kaio César, and renewed Fabrizio Angileri’s contract.

The No 77 is a nod to the club’s 1977 state title, which ended a drought of more than two decades. Lingard will not be the first to take the number.

The last player to wear it was midfielder Igor Coronado. Before him, Marcelinho Carioca, Jadson, Jô and Chrystian Barletta also used the number during their spells with the club.
