Lionel Messi has become owner of CD Eldense, a Spanish second-tier club, with the move confirmed on Thursday.

The Argentine, 39, still playing for Inter Miami, now has two clubs after acquiring UE Cornella, of the Fifth Division, in April. The club said in a statement that Messi’s acquisition opens a hopeful new chapter in its 100-plus-year history, launching a long-term project to support the team’s sporting, institutional and social development.

Eldense, founded in 1921, are currently 19th in the Segunda Division and aim to consolidate and progress in the professional game while championing their roots, history and blaugrana identity.

The transaction remains subject to prior mandatory authorisation from the CSD, as required by Spanish law.

Messi’s arrival at the helm had been anticipated for several weeks.
