According to L'Équipe, Lionel Messi has taken a step forward in his recovery and could feature in Argentina’s upcoming 2026 World Cup warm-up matches.
Argentina, the world champions, face Honduras in College Station, Texas, in the early hours of Sunday, 02:00, then Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, in the early hours of Wednesday, 03:00.
Messi has trained partly with the squad, is no longer working apart, and could play a few minutes in these friendlies. The 38-year-old had not been expected to face Honduras.
At right-back, Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel are recovering from muscle tears, so Agustin Giay and Nicolas Capaldo have been called up for these two games.
Juan Musso, of Atlético de Madrid, would start against Honduras. First-choice Emiliano Martinez, of Aston Villa, fractured the ring finger on his right hand during the warm-up before the Europa League final against Freiburg, 3-0, but he should be available for the World Cup opener against Algeria in Kansas City in the early hours of 16-17 June, 03:00.
