It is often a great sight to see former Barcelona legends give their own opinions on the new generation in front of them. Having gone through the process of representing the Catalan club and what it stands for, their opinions are mostly always welcome. However, there is perhaps one man in Barcelona history whose opinion arguably outweighs that of most others.
Lionel Messi, claimed by many as the greatest player in football history and the man responsible for Barça’s golden age, has a long and storied past with the Catalan club. While the ending was hardly as sweet as anyone would have wanted, most of the chapters in that particular story are full of joy and success.
However, in a recent interview, Messi was asked to comment about Barcelona and he opened up about his feelings towards a possible return and other things alongside it. One thing that does stand out from within that interview is his own opinion of Hansi Flick’s current FC Barcelona team.
As highlighted by SPORT, the Argentine legend and FIFA World Cup winner addressed Flick’s Barça side as being ‘spectacular’, but confessing that the current level of the team does not surprise him either:
“I see it as spectacular; (but) it doesn’t surprise me.”
Having been a product of La Masia himself and having seen firsthand what the youth of Barcelona has to offer, Messi made sure to give them the credit for what has been accomplished so far:
“It’s such a proud moment to see how the first team is being represented right now. This isn’t new; it’s something that’s always been part of Barcelona. I think it’s fantastic that young players are getting their chance. When you give them confidence, they deliver because they know the club and are accustomed to its style of play. When supported, amazing things happen, just like in the past.”
Afterwards, even Hansi Flick thanked Messi for his kind words and claimed it to be an honor for him as well:
“It’s an honor to hear the best player in the club’s history say he likes this Barça… Messi values the young players on the squad and honors what this club has always stood for. It means a lot to the team.”
For now, La Blaugrana will be looking to focus towards their next challenge up ahead. Travelling away to Celta Vigo in La Liga, Hansi Flick’s team knows that while they may have been impressive so far this season, there is still a lot of work left to do.
