Lionel Messi received the Golden Boot trophy ahead of Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer (MLS) play-off opener against Nashville.
The 38-year-old proved why he deserved the award as he recorded two goals to inspire his team to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Nashville.
Messi opened the scoring in the 19th minute by turning home Luis Suarez’s cross with a well-placed header.
Tadeo Allende also popped up with a superb header after the interval to double their lead.
Messi recorded his second with the simplest of finishes in stoppage time after goalkeeper Joe Willis spilt the ball.
Hany Mukhtar scored a late consolation for Nashville, but the Herons cruised to their fourth win in all competitions.
The Argentina international recently signed a new contract with Miami, extending his stay with the MLS outfit until the end of the 2028 season.
Messi’s previous deal was due to expire this year, but the club were eager to negotiate new terms with the forward.
The new deal is set to keep the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in the United States into his 40s.
Messi joined Miami in 2023 following the expiration of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.
He has been instrumental in reviving the club’s fortunes, helping them win the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
Across 83 appearances across all competitions, the World Cup winner has bagged 73 goals and 37 assists.
