Lionel Messi scored his 100th club goal as Inter Miami defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 to claim the 2026 Campeones Cup.
The Herons had won just one of their previous nine games before Wednesday’s annual showdown between the reigning champions of Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX.
But they bounced back with a 2-0 triumph against Cruz Azul at the Nu Stadium, sealing their first trophy of the season.
Messi reached a milestone of 100 goals for Miami when he headed home a pinpoint cross from Luis Suarez in the 24th minute.
The Argentine appeared to have doubled their advantage early in the second half when he fired in off the post after a brilliant through ball from Suarez. But the goal was ruled out for offside.
The 39-year-old then set up Casemiro, who nodded the ball low to the far post in the 81st minute, sealing a memorable victory in front of their home crowd.
Messi is one of the top contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award after playing a crucial role in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final, where they eventually lost to Spain.
He scored eight goals and assisted four in seven starts for the national team, including a hat-trick against Algeria in their opening group game.
Messi has also made an excellent start to the new season, scoring 23 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions.
