Lionel Messi will be looking to break Pele’s record in the FIFA World Cup final on Saturday, when his Argentina side will lock horns with the winner of the semi-final involving France and Morocco.

Messi became the highest goalscorer in Argentine football history in World Cups when he found the back of the net in the game against Croatia. He went past Gabriel Batistuta’s record of ten World Cup goals and also assisted Julian Alvarez brilliantly for the goal which sealed the deal for the Albiceleste.

But the PSG man will be chasing another record in the final. If he comes up with a goal or an assist in that game, he would have levelled Pele’s record for the highest number of goal contributions in World Cup history. Messi is currently at 19, while Pele stands at 20 (via El Grafico)

Having said that, the Brazilian played 14 games and Messi has played 25. Tied with Messi in second are Brazilian Ronaldo, Gerd Muller and Miroslav Klose.
