Lionel Messi saw his penalty saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir during Argentina's last-16 tie on Tuesday, his second miss of the 2026 World Cup and a record fourth in the competition, excluding shootouts.

Argentina, trailing at the time, were awarded a penalty after Haissem Hassan fouled Nicolas Tagliafico in the box. Shobeir dived to his left to repel the Argentina number 10's effort, denying him a 21st World Cup goal.

The miss makes Messi the first player to fail from the spot twice in a single World Cup edition. He had earlier missed against Austria in the group stage, which finished 2-0.

It was also his fourth missed penalty at a World Cup, excluding shootouts, surpassing his own mark. Before this tournament he had failed against Poland in 2022 and Iceland in 2018.

By contrast, he has converted four World Cup penalties, all scored in 2022.
