Lionel Messi is expected to acquire Eldense, which would become his second club in Spain after UE Cornella.

According to L'Équipe, Spanish media report the Argentine would take the reins at the Segunda Division side, having reached a preliminary agreement with Colombian investment fund TH, led by businessman Juan Carlos Trujillo, the club’s current owner.

No fee has been disclosed, though 12 million euros had been cited for a separate attempted buyout by Argentine investor Ricardo Pini, which ultimately did not go through.

Eldense are a modest club from Elda, about 40 kilometres from Alicante in south-east Spain. They play at the Nuevo Pepico Amat, a 5,000-capacity ground.

The team secured promotion in May for an eighth season in their history in the second tier. They are currently 20th of 22, with two points from four matches.
