Lionel Messi has said in an Instagram post that he is unsure he will keep playing for much longer, following the death of his father and agent, Jorge Messi.

Writing on Wednesday, the 39-year-old addressed his late father, admitting he does not know how to carry on without him and that doubts have surfaced over extending his career.

The 2022 world champion also reflected on Jorge’s absence, due to illness, from the most recent World Cup in North America, where Argentina were beaten in the final by Spain, 1-0 after extra time. He said he had wanted to win it for his father but felt his body would not respond despite his efforts.

Messi recalled arriving at Barcelona aged 13 with only his father by his side, and spoke of Jorge’s central role in his life and career. He described him as father, friend and agent, praising his constancy and judgment.

An eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi plays for Inter Miami in MLS, having left Europe three years ago.
